Spark Blog Session 1- Week 5- Year 5

Focus

This week we continued our session one journey by discussing how to stay on task and focused! We launched on how to stay focused while working in the studio. Also talked about the different resources in the studio that we have to help us stay focused and not to be distracted. Some of the resources and ideas the heroes discussed to help stay focused were to use the red/green cards, to set up their work near someone who they won’t be distracted by, and just to get it done so they do not have to get it done during their free time. We also have been helping the newer heroes in the studio with staying focused by offering them choices of materials to work on, showing them the card that has all their options for them to decide, and also continuing to give more presentations so they have plenty of options to go and work on. The guides were so busy giving presentations this week during brain aerobics, we failed to snap a variety of pictures!

“We’re All Wonders”

We read “We’re all Wonders” this week which is a children’s story that focuses on empathy/understanding, being unique, and kindness. The main character of the story was born with one eye and his appearance differs from everyone else. Some of the characters in the book choose to be unkind towards the main character, during these scenes the heroes discussed what could of been differently to promote kindness! The story led us into a great discussion and then a calming art for them to take time to draw their own self portrait that represents them as an individual. When we asked the heroes what they thought it meant that we are all wonders, one of them shared “we are all different if we were all the same that would be weird.” What does we are all wonders mean to you?

We Celebrate You

This week we celebrated Evie, Emmie, and Ty’s birthdays in the studio!

Studio Promises & JOY Mural

The heroes ended their week by signing their studio promises poster. The poster consisted of the guard rails that they thought were most important for us to have a safe environment inside the studio! The promises included:

  • pick up after ourselves

  • listen to the bell

  • kind hands

  • respect materials

  • stay focused

  • walking feet

  • quiet voices

  • include

The heroes were each given a fence post to paint with colors that bring them JOY! That morning we discussed words that started with each sound that JOY makes. We hope you all have a joy fulfilled break!
