Spark Blog Session 6- Week 5- Year 4

What innovative practices have other countries developed for farming and agriculture?

This week we have been focusing on other countries farming practice and agriculture. They started the week off learning about terrace farming in South America. We also presented a problem to them regarding countries in the Middle East that have very dry climates and are surrounded by only salt water that is undrinkable. The heroes met with their squad to come up with a solution to the problem, and then learned about desalination water facilites that transform salt water into drinkable water.

“The Nature Bear Flower Shark Chickens” present their solution to the studio.

“The Solgaleos” presented their solution to the studio.

“The F18 Hornets” presented their solution to the studio.

“The Golden Butterflies” presented their solution to the problem to the studio.

“The Cuddle Cats” presented their solution to the problem.

After the heroes presented their solutions and learned about the desalination water facilities, they did their very own experiment on desalination using a throw away pan, salt water, saran wrap, and a little bowl. They poured salt water in the pan around the bowl and then sealed it with saran wrap and placed a rock on top of it after. We placed it in the sun and that afternoon checked to see if any of the salt water, was turned to fresh and it was. Each hero was able to taste test the salt water and fresh water afterwards. Check out the pictures!

The heroes also learned about flooding in the Netherlands and how that can impact their agriculture and farming. They completed a challenge to fold a piece of card stock into a house and then had to create a barrier to save their house from the flood waters. Check out a sneak peak of their barriers below!
