Spark Blog Session 6- Week 3- Year 4
How Do Pollinators Contribute to the Earth’s Health?
This week we discussed the importance of pollinators and how they contribute to our environment. We presented the heroes with a video that shared the many things that pollinators contribute to our environment such as; fruits, vegetables, honey, and beauty. The heroes met with their squads and came up with ways to protect the bees and other pollinators. Some of the squads described creating a sanctuary to keep them safe, while other squads came up with an idea to make an insectiside that is safe for bees and other pollinators bodies.
The heroes also created their own bee watering cups using clay. After they dried, the heroes were able to paint them and place uv paint in the middle of the cup so the bees could see it better. This was a way that the heroes could provide a simple solution in our backyard to help the bees. Stay tuned to see how we place them in our yard next week once they are dry! What can you do at home to help the pollinators?
The heroes were able to gather with their squads to discover how bee’s spread pollen from flower to flower. They were each given a flower, kraft cheese dust to represent the pollen, and pipe cleaner to use to represent the bee’s legs to transfer the pollen from flower to flower!
The heroes finished off their week on pollinators by painting their very own butterfly wings!
Spark Guest Speaker
Mrs. Nancy Cartie (Pierce & Sawyer’s Nana) came to the studio on Thursday to talk to the heroes about her hero’s journey when a butterfly that needed her support showed up in her garden. She shared how that led to her writing and publishing two children’s books “The Story of Annie the Butterfly- A Time to Fly” and “A Time to be Kind.” She read “A Time to Fly” to the heroes and then each hero was able to plant two Mexican Sunflower seeds to bring home to grow. Thank you Mrs. Nancy for your kindness and time you took to come out to the studio!
DEAR with Discovery
This week the Spark heroes read their All about Reader books to the discovery heroes. The Discovery heroes had a challenge of their own, they had to ask the Spark heroes to give them different adjectives, nouns, and verbs so they could fill in a silly mad lib. Once they filled in the mad lib with all of the words they then had to read the silly mad lib to the Spark heroes, who couldn’t contain their laughter from the silly stories!
Hero Highlights & Brain Areobics
This week the heroes had a process art set up as a work to do during brain areobics. They were able to create a dandelion using blue card stock, Q-tips, a paint brush, green, and white paint. Check out their art below!
This week Katherine and Ameile have offically completed Cathie Perolman, which means they have mastered all of their initial sounds in reading and they are ready to move on to Waseca! Way to go, we would call that hard work and focus!
Grayson and Zachariah have completed a whole tracker for their all about reader books. Charleigh has mastered sight word list 7. Way to stay focused and work hard heroes!
